Kuqa Tour

Kizil thousand-buddha grotto, Kuqa Tianshan grand canyon.

We will have a private tour to Kizil thousand-buddha grottoes, on the steep cliff walls of the Kizil Thousand Buddha Grottoes, layer after layer overlap for a length of 3.2 kilometers – it is the largest buddhist relic site in Xinjiang. The caves were cut from the 3rd to 13th century, and are the earliest man-made grottoes in China. There are 236 caves with murals covering about 10,000 square meters, one-upped only by the Dunhuang Caves. Nobody knows who the first disciple to visit was, nor when and where he was from. 1700 years ago, Buddhism in Kuqa held a position of absolute administrative rule, with the theocratic kingdom being one of the most developed sites of Buddhism in the Western Region. In today’s Kuqa County, approximately 23 kilometers to the northeast, is the Subas Old City, which is the remnants of a Buddhist temple from the Wei and Jin Dynasties. The Kuqa river cuts through it, dividing it into two halves – the East Temple and West Temple. The famous monk of the Latter Qin Dynasty, Kumarajiva, and the Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang both preached sermons here. During the time of the Kuqa Kingdom, there were more than 100 temples and 5,000 monks.

Under the vast, captivating sky of the Taklimakan, against the backdrop of signal fires, merchant caravans made their long excursions, leaving hehind cities buried in the sand. The traces of ruined walls and the sun-bleached bones of camels and starkly resolute poplars – they appear as a riddle left by a higher being. These expanses are now crisscrossed by modern highways, with petrochemicals and modern culture carving a new history into the land.

After lunch to handmade carpet factory and silk workshop at the local villiages. The sand and dust that surround the city come from the not-far-away Taklimakan Desert. For centuries, the residents have put up with the powerful assaults from their desert neighbour. Time has forged a channel between the two of them, and a good-neighbourly relationship between the residents of the oasis and the desert as well.

Aidelaisi(Atlas) is a kind of dyed silk, which is also called”yubo Funa Kanatiguli” meaning “flowers of the wings of the cuckoo”, a metaphor for the silk being able to bring tidings of spring, like the cuckoo. It is locally produced with traditional methods, leveraging grass roots, walnut peels, pomegranate peels, Tuman flowers, and other plants for dye bases. The patterns are simple, abstract, and have a feeling of something splendid against a desolate backdrop. This is how the world always is – the most beautiful of colors are hidden within the most bleak places.
